FBI agents revealed more details on Tuesday about how they think an Internet child sex ring with ties to San Diego operates.
Three men were arrested on Harbor Island over the week as part of the investigation. The feds also picked up four other men in Los Angeles. The men were allegedly on their way to meet boys between the ages of 8 and 13 in Mexico.
Officials told NBC 7/39 that it was a well-planned road trip infiltrated by an undercover agent. The FBI said that the suspects were headed for a marina on Harbor Island, where the plan was to board vessels sailing to Mexico for sexual relations with boys solicited via the Internet.
The suspects include a youth minister, a special-education teacher and a man from Dallas known as the Singing Dentist. According to investigators, the men are all associated with a group known as NAMBLA, which stands for North American Man/Boy Love Association. The group is believed to have 300 to 400 active members who promote a pedophile lifestyle both on the Web and through regular mail.
The organization and their non-member sympathizers are shadowed by some 30 Internet-crimes-against-children task forces nationwide, including several local law-enforcement agencies and the local FBI office.
"Through the investigation, we've discovered there's two members of NAMBLA who have the full membership list -- mostly likely in encrypted digital format," said FBI Special Agent John Caruthers "And so that's just another indication of how private they are."
Parents are being advised to talk frankly with their children about the possibility of being targeted by people who want to lure them into situations where they can be preyed upon. Also, if children are spending time on the Internet, an investment into parenting software -- which can keep tabs on which sites the children are visiting -- is encouraged.
