Thought they were setting up dates with teens from online chatrooms.
Undercover detectives nabbed two men in an internet sex sting. Toledo police say the men solicited sex from a teen over the internet, then told the teen to meet them. The men didn't know their internet chat was with a Toledo police officer. The two men are locked up at the Lucas County jail, accused of preying on teenage girls. Toledo police arrested Brent Hurley and Joshua Martin. They're accused of soliciting minors for sex.
Undercover agents entered a chatroom and posed as a 15-year-old girl on the internet. They say Martin, 25, didn't waste any time and asked the agent to meet him at the McDonald's on Front and Main. That's where police nabbed the Portage, Ohio, man.
Detective Paul Tetuan says police caught Hurley the same way. They say the Bryan, Ohio, man even emailed a photo. He then told the officer to meet him at Westfield Shoppingtown Franklin Park. Police eventually arrested him on Monroe Street. Both men are charged with attempted unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, along with other charges.
Tetuan says internet predators are online 24/7 and that's why he recommends parents brushing up on their computer skills. "They have to take the time to learn how to go through the computer and learn where their kids have been."
So how can you protect your kids while they're chatting online? Computer expert Lawrence Renfrow suggests checking the history on your computer. He says just click on the clock icon. It will list the websites your child browsed that day and during the last three weeks. You can also buy an internet filter for your computer. Renfrow says, "One will lock out and keep them from getting to specific programs. It will also monitor the activity and give you a log of what they did on the computer, what websites the went to, what chat rooms."
