A teacher once named Lumberton's Educator
of the Year is charged with possession of child pornography.
Sixth-grade social studies and language arts teacher Joseph
Macanga was arrested Wednesday.
The FBI seized his computer last fall after an agent found him
in an Internet chat room used by pedophiles.
According to the criminal complaint, more than 300 images of
child pornography were on the computer and there was evidence that
he had accessed nearly 30 chat rooms with names like
"baby&toddlerlove."
The Lumberton Board of Education says the 55-year-old, who had
taught in the district for 10 years, will not return to the
classroom.
"If it's true, a lot of people are still in complete disbelief," said school district spokeswoman Betsy Kapulskey. She said Macanga, who told the FBI he was an ex-priest, was his school's Educator of the Year in 2003.
The sixth-grade teacher, who also coached girls' soccer and basketball teams, will not return to the Lumberton district, Kapulskey said

This was my daughter's teacher last year. I'm in shock.
