Investigators rescue 31 kids, round up 700 suspects in global pedophilia probe

Investigators say they rescued 31 children and arrested more than 700 people as part of a 10-month global investigation into pedophiles who trafficked in images that showed children being abused.

“Any individual who thinks they carry out such horrific activities undetected is in for a very rude awakening," the head of the Virtual Global Taskforce says in a statement.

After arresting the 27-year-old British man accused of running an Internet chat room called "Kids the Light of Our Lives," police say they found 75,960 "indecent and explicit images" on his computer. Working with detectives in 35 countries, police say they managed to "smash" the international network that trafficked in these images.

The press release from the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre in London argues that news organizations should refer to the photographs or videos as "child abuse images" because when you describe the material as "child pornography":

• It indicates legitimacy and compliance on the part of the victim and therefore legality on the part of the abuser.

• It conjures up images of children posing in ‘provocative’ positions, rather than suffering horrific abuse

• Every photograph captures an actual situation where a child has been abused. This is not pornography.
