An upstate man caught in an Internet child sex sting by Nassau police was a longtime Little League safety officer, responsible for conducting criminal background checks on volunteers and ensuring the safety of boys and girls 7-12 years old, police and published reports said.
Gary Ryan, 37, of Mechanicville, whose next court appearance is set for Tuesday in First District Court, Hempstead, was handed over to Nassau police computer crimes detectives on outstanding warrants this weekend.
He is suspended from all youth baseball volunteer roles, Mechanicville-Stillwater Little League president Jon Simmons told ABC affiliate WTEN-TV in Albany.
Ryan, 37, of 10 Tenendaho Lane, Mechanicville, was also a member of the Mechanicville city planning board, an emergency medical technician, and a Teamsters union organizer. He was suspended from his duties as an EMT and planning board member pending the outcome of the investigation.
